Presentation on José Guadalupe Posada at the UNAM
This week, writer and curator Agustín Sánchez González presented his book on the Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM),Informador newspaper reports.
The book, entitled The Wondrous Life of Jose Guadalupe Posada, is a bibliographical chronology of Posada’s life and work, which, according to its author, attempts to get beyond the surface level knowledge of Posada and his exclusive equation with works featuring skulls.
Sánchez González explains that ‘Posada is not skulls or is not only skulls, Posada is much more than this, so in this book what I have done is dig up a history of Posada that nobody knows or remembers…’ His book attempts to explore the diverse and numerous ways in which Mexicans can identify with Posada and how his life and work can function as ‘a mirror’ of the nation.
Following the presentation of the book, a new exhibition on the works of Posada entitled ‘Posada altered’ opened at the university, featuring over 20 of the artist’s prints.
