In honor of José Guadalupe
Posada
The Mega Ofrenda at the
historic center of Mexico City was made in honor of José Guadalupe Posada
(1852-1913), this past October 31st, November 1st and 2nd 2013.
Who was José Guadalupe Posada?
José Guadalupe Posada was a
mexican printmaker and illustrator, best known for his skull and skeleton prints,
in which he used satire to represent the social problems and injustices of
mexican life.
Posada was a freelancer and
throughout his life he created several works including book covers, fliers,
prints for traditional mexican games like the lotería, and various illustrations
which appeared in newspapers. He made his work in Aguascalientes, Leon
Guanajuato and Mexico City.
A good part of what is
known about José Guadalupe Posada is thanks to Agustín Sánchez, historian,
writer, journalist and INBA (National Institute for the Fine Arts)
investigator.
